Meetjesland
On the 17/12/95 the Streekplatform+ Meetjesland was
established, based on the renewed regional economic policy
of the Flemish Authority. Eleven East-Flemish towns and villages
choose to become member of the Streekplatform Meetjesland.
The Streekplatform+ Meetjesland provides a neutral forum
for the representative organisations and the participating
public authorities from the Meetjesland to discuss the socio-economic
planning of the region. The principal activities of the region
are represented by political parties, representatives of the
business community, the various municipalities, the provinces,
the employees, the education, the socio-cultural sector, the
social profit sector, the self-employed, the farming community
and the environmental and nature groups.
Regional vision and primary projects
Meanwhile, intensive consultation resulted in a regional
vision, carried in consensus by the participating public authorities
and organisations. In this vision the responsible parties
determine in which direction they wish to develop the region.
8 primary projects were also defined. These are important
projects which are a concrete implementation of the most important
elements of the regional vision:
- 1. improvement of agriculture
- 2. realisation of a food cluster Meetjesland
- 3. improvement of the residential quality - stimulation
of the construction sector
- 4. improvement of the regional recreation and tourism
- 5. fostering of the social cohesion
- 6. improvement of the infrastructure and environment
- 7. a wide and varied choice of adult education
- 8. improvement of the regional cooperation in the Meetjesland
The implementation of the mission and the primary projects
assume a commitment of all participating public authorities
and organisations.
