Weekend away in Meetjesland

Weekend away in Meetjesland

The holiday of a lifetime (with a wink)

There is so much to do in Meetjesland that you won't be able to see the trees for the Lembeek Forest. Hand-picked for you: a lavish weekend break, featuring some of the region's highlights.

Eeklo base

Eeklo, right between Bruges and Ghent, is like the centre of a four-leaf clover amongst some beautiful areas. To the north you will find the creek area and to the west the Lembeek Forests. South of Eeklo is the Leen and rippling De Lieve, where you can take a lovely bike ride. The centre of Eeklo itself is dominated by one of the tallest churches in Flanders. Its 16th-century town hall, belfry, neo-Gothic core and narrow streets are particularly charming.

Stay in a listed monument: Shamon Hotel

Hotel Shamon in Eeklo is a special place to sleep. The villa of Brussels Art Nouveau architect Paul Cauchie was transformed into a cosy and stylish boutique hotel, preserving its beautiful architecture and interiors. The hotel is a protected monument with beautiful stained-glass windows and unusual sgraffito murals. From the moment you enter, you step into an era of pure elegance, grace and architectural splendour. Each of the 10 rooms is named after an Art Nouveau artist, including Gustav Klimt. Because the story goes that he too worked on the interior.

The hotel has 10 unique rooms equipped with all modern comforts, a cosy breakfast room overlooking the century-old trees in the garden and a friendly bar. Nearby is The Leen Provincial Domain. On the other side of the hotel is Eeklo, the picturesque capital of Meetjesland.

Day 1, morning: a walk in het Leen

Het Leen is a thriving forest of no less than 278 hectares, with a beautiful arboretum and a hiking area where you can get lost for hours: what more could a person want? Wheelchair users and families with buggies can comfortably navigate many of the walks. But there is also no shortage of non-paved paths. If you head out, you will find as many as 15 ponds on your way.

Children can run wild on the estate. A play forest has been created as well as a large playground close to the car park. So you can easily come and play for a few hours too without having to traverse the entire domain. The educational forest centre and arboretum present hundreds of fascinating facts about the forest. You can borrow a host of materials that will guide children through the mysteries of the forest. There is a bird watching hut for early risers. With some luck, you can even spot deer there, if you are very quiet.

The main entrance to Het Leen is the imposing and recently renovated Forest Information Centre at 80 Gentsesteenweg. All walks through the domain also start from there. But first: climb! Opposite the entrance to the Forest Information Centre is an observation tower no less than 21 metres high and 6 metres long. The glass platform gives you an excellent view of Het Leen and its surroundings. Not for the faint of heart!

You can visit Het Leen, during daylight, through the central entrance: Provinciaal domein Het Leen, Gentsesteenweg 60, 9900 Eeklo (T +32 9 376 74 74). Cyclists can bike through it from cycling node 58 of 55 in Eeklo towards node 57 en 54 in Lievegem, in both directions.

Day 1, afternoon: have lunch in De Ramblas

't Rootjen, a row of houses from the 17th century between the church and Eeklo's cosy market is a household name in the region. Here, overlooking the 16th-century town hall, you will find one cosy eatery next to another. The jewel in the crown is De Ramblas, with an atmosphere of southern charm. The name refers to Eeklo's wish to turn the N9 thoroughfare in the city into one cosy green space like the Ramblas in Barcelona. Even now, though, De Ramblas' outdoor terrace is the market's most popular spot. There is always a crowd, summer and winter. You can eat bistro classics like steak with fries, vol au vent or Dover sole. Be sure to check out the monthly menu too!

Day 1 afternoon: an original experience museum

From recent historical heritage to a pig walk, Meetjesland has much more in store than you might think. Choose from the following highlights:

A ride on the steam train

The Steam Centre in the former Maldegem train station has the largest collection of running steam and diesel trains in Flanders. Fred, for example, a 1923 shunting locomotive that ran on British lines for many years. Or Yvonne, at over 125 years old the country's oldest still-running steam locomotive.

Can you imagine yourself roaring through the countryside in one of those authentic steam trains? You can do just that! From May to late September, you can simply order a ticket for a ride Maldegem-Eeklo and back, on an old diesel locomotive or an authentic carriage of the Orient Express. Velvet sofas, curtains, lights, stylishly decorated compartments ... You will feel like Hercule Poirot. Complete the experience with an exclusive Orient Dining Express programme. On board the steam train, you will be served a typical Meetjesland menu, served by renowned delicatessen and caterers.

Back to WWII

Have you always been fascinated by World War II? Adegem is home to the Canada Poland War Museum, dedicated entirely to the heroes of the liberation. The mobilisation, occupation and victory over the Nazis are depicted with more than 300 dolls with full uniforms, weapons and broadcasting equipment: a unique private collection at European level. The Maple Leaf section displays battles of WWII in miniature, with thousands of soldiers, tanks, weapons, vehicles, cannons etc. It took 7 years to recreate everything exactly.

If you feel like visiting in person the locations where the war was fought, you can join the museum's Battle Tour - an exclusive tour of the Flemish and Zeeland warfields, with an expert guide. Afterwards, you can chat in the impressive historic setting of tearoom The Canadian. Highly recommended!

The Pig whisperers

Oosteeklo residents are mockingly called pigs by neighbouring communities. And these days, they are proud of it. So much so that around the site of the castle and 13th-century abbey, you can take a Pig tour - individually or with a guide. The signposted tour starts at the castle in Kloosterakkerstraat. There are 17 signs and all kinds of artwork by locals with a nod to the monastic past and the nickname of the people of Oosteeklo. You will learn the story of the pig in our language, in religion, the food chain and art. You will also get a great view of the Cistercian Abbey, whose history dates back to the 12th century. There are regular guided tours of the monastery (usually in groups). You can make a booking here.

Day 1, evening: dinner at La Maryse

Restaurant La Maryse, just off Hotel Shamon, is located in a stately mansion that exudes history. The dishes, on the other hand, are very much up to date. The young chef, Sten Van der Blij, raises a high profile with his tasty, seasonal dishes using the best local produce. Try to grab a table on the terrace in the small town garden, it's worth it!

Day 2: Bike ride through the Meetjesland creek area

Ready for a day spent admiring nature on two wheels? Then try the creeks cycling route that departs and arrives at the Huysmanhoeve in Eeklo. A brisk 52.6-kilometre ride past picturesque villages, green lanes, impressive forests and fairytale creeks. On the way, you will pass Sint-Laureins and Assenede, the quintessential creek towns in Flanders, and the Boerekreek, the most extensive of all creeks. But Oostpolderkreek also offers you beautiful views - be sure to take a walk on the long fishing pier.

The Creek area is the ideal spot for bird watching. Reed Warbler, avocet and redshank are regular guests. In winter, you will also find grey geese, Bewick's swans and Pink-footed Geese. Not to mention wintering birds of prey like the peregrine falcon and the hen harrier. Also enjoy the overwhelming views over the Leopold Canal or the Bentille Creek, get off at the white church of Sint-Jan-in-Eremo or visit Watervliet - one of the 15 most beautiful villages in Flanders with a beautiful church and picturesque streets.

Day 2: culinary stop in Polderzicht Sint-Jan-in-Eremo

If all that cycling and sightseeing has left you hungry, you can indulge your palate at eel restaurant Polderzicht in St John-in-Eremo. The De Wever family's restaurant has gained a name and fame as an eel expert. The days when eels were simply fished out of the Boerekreek 100 metres away are sadly over. But you won't soon forget your restaurant visit at Polderzicht, if only because of the beautiful view of the creek area. Feel free to also cross the street to admire the fairytale church of Sint-Jan!

Or will you go for restaurant the Roste Muis? Here, too, you will taste eel in at least four different ways, which you can wash down with special Muizebier. In summer, the large café terrace is a major draw with a view of the picturesque church of St John the Baptist: sheer bliss!
